Interview with Sevjan @ Birdie Num Nums Cafe SE14
Birdie Num Nums is one of the most important cafe’s in New Cross heralding a new age for local businesses in the area. #SupportLocal
Voted Best Cafe in New Cross on numerous occasions by Timeout, it has quickly become a firm favourite for locals and students of Goldsmiths University.
This place has a cool vibe about it and the staff are very much relaxed but at the same time serve quality. It’s nice to kick-back, relax and read, chat or eat in Birdies as the world drifts by.
I caught up with owner Sevjan and this is what she had to tell me….
Give us a little introduction to Birdie Num Nums.
Sevjan: Birdie Num Nums is an award winning independent cafe that opened 5 years ago. We have won Timeout London’s ‘Best Cafe’ in New Cross every year since opening and serve cheap, quick comfort food and great coffee.
Why did you open in New Cross?
Sevjan:I grew up in New Cross, in this building! My family have owned it for over 40 years. Before the cafe it was our family off license. Circumstances changed and my sister and I took it over and turned it into Birdies – so it really is a proper family business!
What were you doing before you opened?
Sevjan: I was living in Brighton for a number of years working as a professional singer and working in cafes and bars too.
Does Birdie Num Nums have a mission and what is it?
Sevjan: Despite what our hipster sounding name may suggest – we are really down to earth people. I love to chat to anyone and feed everyone! So that’s basically it, we have fun, have a gossip, play some bangers and feed people good hearty food.
Could you describe the food and coffee you sell?
Sevjan: I am half Turkish Cypriot and half English, so the menu has a mix from my culture. We do the yummiest Full English breakfast in the area and similarly a Full Turkish breakfast which is a must try! We have loads veggie and vegan versions too, vegan cakes and also quick grab and go options. We serve all our coffees at £2 as we don’t think you should have to pay a bomb for a great bean!
Are you working with local distillers or brewers?
Sevjan: Yes, I work with a few locals and my mum bakes our cakes. Our coffee is roasted just up the road in Surrey Quays.
What are you doing that’s different?
Sevjan: I guess people would say we are a little more quirky than most of the local places, but only because we I’m a vintage girl at heart and love anything old and timeless. We try not to pay too much attention to trends and just go with the classics done well.
What is your favourite thing about New Cross?
Sevjan: It’s my home ❤️
Describe New Cross in one word.
Sevjan: Old school (I know that’s two but I’m bad at maths) 🤷🏻♀️
Birdie Num Nums is located at 11 Lewisham Way(an equidistant walk from New Cross Gate or New Cross station) and is open from 9am to 5pm most days.
