Interview with the Marquis of Granby’s John Kelly
It’s not hard to spot the Marquis of Granby.
Public art activists Artmongers were commissioned last year by Anthology to create a new landmark for New Cross and they chose one of the most popular pubs in the area.
We now have the beautiful painted landscape on the Marquis acting as a beckoning call to the emerging artists of the area. It is thought that the addition will have a positive impact on the neighbourhood inviting new businesses to set up shop.
The Marquis of Granby is steeped in history. Once upon a time it was one of London’s museum taverns – an advert from 1913 reads “The Marquis of Granby Museum well worth a visit. Curios of every description. Four minutes from theatre. All trams stop at the door. Wines spirits and cigars of the best quality.”
The current owners are the Kelly Family from Ireland who have transformed the pub into a focal point for all things New Cross. The students from Goldsmiths are regulars as to are the local workers.
The Kelly’s are also a proud family from Donegal in Ireland and keep their heritage to the fore. I caught up with John Kelly to ask him a few questions.
Give us a description of your bar.
John: We are a sports and music based pub showcasing all major sporting events with monthly nights varying from karaoke nights, quiz nights and xbox gaming nights.
When did you open in New Cross?
John: The Marquis is a family run Irish pub, being in the family for nearly 40 years now. My grandfather first took over this pub in the 80s.
Does your bar have a mission and what is it?
John: We don’t have a mission statement per se however our mission is to provide a warm, fun, friendly home from home space inclusive of all people.
Do you serve food?
John: We don’t serve food but anyone is more than welcome to bring their own to enjoy.
What is your favourite thing about New Cross?
John: My favourite thing about New Cross is the diversity and community spirit. Growing up in New Cross I have seen the area change for the good.
