Interview with Anaís Alvarado @ Retreat Yoga Studio SE14
This morning I had the great pleasure in trying the Yin&Yang yoga class at Retreat Yoga Studio on New Cross Road.
I’m not the most flexible but I’m definitely more after that session!
The class was surprisingly well packed for a wet October morning with everyone enjoying the extra hour in bed. There was a good mix of men and women ranging from beginner to advanced while the studio is fully kitted out with mats, blocks, blankets and cushions, the way I like it 🙂
I must mention our instructor Kat Basquill who really made me feel included throughout, even though I was miles behind, thank you.
And that’s the vibe I get from everyone here, yes there are experts doing handstands but the staff treat the beginner and everyone in between with the same level of respect and admiration.
After our class I caught up with the owner Anaís Alvarado and this is what she had to tell me…
Give us a little introduction to Retreat Yoga Studio.
Anaís: The idea is to lift the awareness for yoga and meditation in this community by creating a bit of a hub for people to come together and connect.
Why did you open in New Cross?
Anaís: I lived here for three years on Jerningham road near New Cross Gate station. In fact, my first yoga class I ever taught was for students in Goldsmiths.
What were you doing before it opened?
Anaís: I’m an actor. Took it up at the age of 13. I created my own show for the Edinburgh fringe festival in 2015 called Pole.
What are you doing that’s different?
Anaís: What sets us apart is that we are actively trying to build a new community, all our teachers are south east London based. We also prioritise meditation and actively help people to practice SLOWING DOWN.
You mentioned the word community, could you go further into that please?
Anaís: Yes, we sell classes much like other yoga studios however on Fridays at midday, we have community yoga which is a pay as much as you can afford session.
And again, on Thursday, Friday and Sunday evenings, we run a donations based meditation class so please come along!
What is your favourite thing about New Cross?
Anaís: I love how colourful it is. How diverse it is.
