Interview with Jimmy the barman @ The Blackhorse SE8
A proper British boozer on Evelyn Street about a five minute walk from Deptford High Street but a rewarding one all the same.
This bar is one of the coolest places in the SE8 postcode. I guess you’d call the decor shabby chic but there’s enough quirky pieces of furniture dotted around the floor to keep you entertained. Once more there are plenty of lights with the most notable being the shoe repair claim.
From the outside this bar is striking. Built in 1840 this building has hosted many versions of The Blackhorse and what you see today is definitely top of the pile. Opposite the pub there is an old road named after the pub, Blackhorse Road. This road ran parallel to the Grand Surrey Canal where industries grew up along the bank.
The Blackhorse also makes for a great picture opportunity especially in this autumn sunshine. Get down now all you Instagrammers!
I caught up with Jimmy, the happiest barman in Deptford and here is what he had to tell me.
Give us a quick description of your bar.
Jimmy: We serve great food like our famous sourdough pizza, we show the boxing and other sports, we’re a proper British boozer.
Does your bar have a mission?
Jimmy: We’re here for everyone, the Millwall crowd, the artsy Deptford folk and for the next person that walks through the door. A friendly bar.
What were you doing before this?
Jimmy: I threw boomerangs in Hamleys Toy Store!
Are you working with local suppliers?
Jimmy: Yes, we’ve got a few local brews in the mix including a customer favourite Peckham Pils from the Brick Brewery.
Can you really get your shoes repaired while you wait?
Jimmy: You can but the quality is not guaranteed!
What is your favourite thing about Deptford?
Jimmy: Deptford Market, it has it all, fruit and veg, good clothes, great prices, no need to go anywhere else and it’s a proper London market.
Describe Deptford in one word.
