Interview with Khaitee Mills @ The New Cross House SE14
The New Cross House is one of the most handsome buildings in South East London and to make things even better it’s a good pub too.
A great space in a very popular location, the New Cross House is very popular with the students of Goldsmiths and the lecturers alike. Grab a book, an easel and a pint to join in with the local people.
This bar is clean and chic while still displaying the rough around the edges quality that we all love about New Cross. Also, check out the garden area which is one of the best in these parts.
I caught up with the Bar Manager Khaitee Mills and this is what she had to tell me.
Give us a little introduction to Walpole.
Khaitee: We’re run by the Metropolitan Pub Company which is a part of the Greene King group. Our bar is very much focused on local clientele and of course Goldsmiths which is to down the alley.
Why did you open in New Cross?
Khaitee: There has always been some form of a bar in this location. If it works then why change it. We reestablished this place in 2011 from what was previously called The Goldsmiths Tavern.
What were you doing before it opened?
Khaitee: I’ve worked with Greene King for the past 6 years working and managing bars in the city.
Does the bar have a mission and what is it?
Khaitee: We treat the bar like an independent and act like an independent but we can be secure in the fact that we have the backing of a larger group to serve quality to our customers.
Do you serve food and how would you describe it?
Khaitee: Our food is best described as American although we do serve a great pizza too from our wood fire oven. Being so close to Goldsmiths University our lunchtime meal deal does very well.
Are you working with local distillers or brewers?
Khaitee: We work with local breweries and serve resident craft beers on rotation. Our bread comes from a London company called Flour Station while everyday we receive deliveries of local meats and veg.
What are you doing that’s different?
Khaitee: We add creativity and personality, exhibit local artists work for free, offer life drawing classes and free cinema nights. We have some good connection between the uni and here. While are employees really care about the pub and the area.
What is your favourite thing about New Cross?
Khaitee: I like that it’s quite young, central was very touristy and rather the clientele here.
