Interview with Patrick Ryan @ The White Hart SE14
The White Hart on New Cross Road is one of the most underrated bars in South East London.
For years the White Hart was a run down old bar but since the new owners came in they have transformed this into a great local for the people of New Cross Gate. In fact, around 2009 the owner of the bar was trying to create a strip club called Unique which sadly/thankfully fell through.
There are a few things I really like about the White Hart. One, they have a great selection of beers and spirits, going beyond the norm. Two, the chef is a magician and still somehow keeps it within affordable reach. Three, the bar is massive and made of blackened wood which gives it a feeling of grandeur. Four, the staff are fun and chatty, always a good thing for a local boozer. Five, they are constantly trying new things.
I caught up with the owner Patrick Ryan and this is what he had to say….
Give us a little introduction to the White Hart.
Patrick:The White Hart reopened in September 2016 as a pub focused on serving the best local and international beer, an interesting and changing seasonal food menu and an aim at giving the most fun, entertaining late nights possible.
How would you describe your food?
Patrick: We serve food from midday to 10pm Monday to Sunday. Best described as a modern pub food, taking fish and chips and burgers to another level and also sliding some Mediterranean, continental dishes in there too.
What were you doing before you opened?
Patrick: Graduated my degree in finance before being dropped to manage craft beer pubs north of the river.
Does the White Hart have a mission and what is it?
Patrick: To provide people a relaxed social environment to drink great beer and eat some delicious food. Then the option to dance later. Boom!
What differentiates the White Hart from other pubs?
Patrick: We brew mega small batch beers in a cellar that survived two world wars.
Are you working with local distillers or brewers?
Patrick: Yes we are! Kernel, BBNO, Partizan to name a few.
What is your favourite thing about New Cross?
Patrick: The community, and the fact that it is a little pocket of greatness not so far from heart of London. And, sorry to squeeze it in there, that it was, back in the day, the entrance to the great city of London.
Describe New Cross in one word.
The White Hart is located at 184 New Cross Road(a very short walk from New Cross Gate station) and is open from 4pm everyday.
