Interview @ The Walpole Bar SE14
A new bar has opened on New Cross Road and this one is definitely different for the area!
An industrial-styled bar with a selection of local beers describes itself as a gastropub. Food menu is small at the moment but they are preparing to go large very soon.
The decor is fantastic, it’s got that exclusive look to it and is definitely a good place to pop your laptop up to work for the afternoon. Looking forward to seeing some events here in the future to see how it handles a big crowd.
Give us a little introduction to Walpole.
Walpole: Walpole has been around for a long time before its’ infamous closing (and demolition) in early 2010’s. The new development was to be open for business as a hotel, but then things changed, and ta-da. This place gets to become a pub again.
We definitely wanted to keep some heritage that’s been left behind, which was to use the original name, and include some history into the pub. All the original tiles were severely damaged from demolition, so we made custom ones quite close to the originals and they have beautified our bar now.
When did you open in New Cross?
Walpole: We opened in September 2018. Slowly but successfully integrating with the community.
Does the bar have a mission and what is it?
Walpole: Cannot call it a ”mission” but we definitely want to bring South London sound to Walpole in the near future. I’m coming from events background and have produced many events & festivals in the past.
So, expect new jazz, breakthrough underground DJ’s and such in the upcoming months from us.
Do you serve food and how would you describe it?
Walpole: We’ve started serving food. Pide (pronounced pee-dah) is our special, it is Mediterranean/Anatolian Pizza that has freshly made dough, shaped as a boat, baked in wood-fire oven for a crispy crust with fresh ingredients.
We also produce a full menu starting from mid-October and some tastings are coming along the way.
Are you working with local distillers or brewers?
Walpole: We work with local breweries and serve craft beer on tap. All our craft beers are inside the 5 mile radius (apart from Renegade Brewery, which is a product of West Berkshire.), has various styles beer-wise with a satisfying beer selection in bottles&cans. We also serve local spirits & well-made cocktails.
What is your favourite thing about New Cross?
Walpole: Different cultures coming together & sharing,it’s a London thing!
